Message from the ISTH President,

The College of Agricultural Sciences of the University of Puerto Rico at Mayagüez, through its Office of International Programs, invites you to join us for the 62nd Annual Scientific Meeting of the Inter-American Society for Tropical Horticulture (ISTH). The meeting will be held at the Rincón Beach Resort, Añasco, on Puerto Rico’s West coast, September 5-9, 2016.

ISTH was founded on 1951, to promote the exchange of knowledge and experience among those interested in horticultural sciences in the western hemisphere. The most important activity of this Society is its annual scientific meeting, which is celebrated in different places from one year to the next. In 2015, the meeting was held in Manaus, Brasil. In the past, Puerto Rico has hosted the annual meeting in 2006 (San Juan), 1976 (Mayagüez) and 1960 (San Juan); in 1983 Puerto Rico also was host to an ISTH potato workshop in Mayagüez.

In the middle of the Caribbean Sea, Puerto Rico is a beautiful tropical island of 9104 km2, with striking geographic contrasts of coastal plains alongside mountain ranges, exuberant vegetation, gastronomy, music and the hospitality of the borinqueños (Puerto Ricans). In Puerto Rico horticulture is represented by vegetables, fruits, and ornamentals, coffee, cacao, banana, plantain and other starchy crops, as well as aromatic herbs and medicinal plants.

The College of Agricultural Sciences of the University of Puerto Rico at Mayagüez began in 1911, and it is the largest organization in the island for teaching, extension, and research in horticulture and other areas agricultural knowledge. With its headquarters in the city of Mayagüez, in the middle of Puerto Rico’s western coast, the College has facilities, staff and activities all over the island.

This meeting will be an excellent opportunity for you to present the results of your work in horticulture-related fields as well as to meet old friends and make new ones among the researchers, extension agents, professors, students, growers, entrepreneurs, and enthusiasts of horticultural crops and related fields coming from many different places of the world to meet in Puerto Rico.

I hope to soon have the opportunity to see you in person in person to greet you saying “Welcome to Puerto Rico, the Island of Enchantment!!”

RULES FOR SUBMISSION OF ABSTRACTS AND PRESENTATION OF PAPERS

The deadline for submitting abstracts to appear in the Book of Abstracts is July 24, 2016.

Abstract will be accepted from those who have already paid their registration for the 62nd Meeting of the ISTH. In first instance, a person may be lead author on up to two (2) abstracts. Depending on the availability of spaces in the program, the committee may later accept additional abstracts from the same author. There is no limit to the number of other abstracts in which a person can be co-author.

Submissions must be original, and the information in the abstract may not have been published or be subject to publication in abstract or article in other meetings.

The committee will not accept abstracts for presentations about literature reviews, descriptions of projects, abstracts without promising results, and abstracts published in programs of proceedings of other meetings.

Abstracts must be related to aromatic and medicinal plants, fruits, vegetables, plantain, banana or starchy roots, coffee, cacao, ornamental and landscaping plants. The themes of the presentations can be genetic resources, plant breeding, biotechnology, nanotechnology, biology crop and related organisms, mechanization and precision agriculture (including use of drones), basic and applied plant physiology, management practices, crop management in protected environments, weather and climate effects on crops and their products, soil factors and water, crop protection (pathogens, pests, weeds), integration of horticultural and livestock systems, integration of horticultural plants to forests, organic gardening and other alternative systems, education and agricultural extension, horticultural science and technology in postharvest, economics and marketing of horticultural products, and international aspects in horticulture. If you have questions about whether a specific topic is acceptable, contact the organizers of the 62nd Meeting.

Abstracts will be received by the organizers in the email morales.payan@upr.edu. Please carefully review your resume before submitting it. The spelling of the abstract is the responsibility of the authors.

1- The summary may be in Spanish, Portuguese, or English, in doc or docx format.

2- The title should have no more than 15 words. It will be centralized and in font type Arial, size 12, boldface and in capital letters (except scientific names, which must be lowercase italics or italics).

3- The names of the authors, separated by commas, centralized, font type Arial size 10. The name of the presenter of the abstract will be underlined.

4- The name of each author must have a superscript in Arabic numeral at the end of the name. Below follows the author’s affiliation (institution, state, country) and email, left-aligned.

5- The text of the abstract must be written in one single paragraph, justified on both sides, up to 300 words in font Arial size 12. The abstract should contain a brief justification of work, objective (s), materials and methods, results and conclusions.

6- Keywords: up to three (3) keywords, in alphabetical order, separated by semicolons, in Arial size 12. The words that already appear in the title must not have to appear again in the list of keywords.

7- Funding organization (optional): Arial size 12.

When submitting the abstract, you must indicate if you prefer to present orally or in poster. The organizers will try to accommodate the preferences of the authors. The committee will notify the main author if the abstract has been accepted or not for presentation, and the type of presentation (oral or poster).

Oral presentations will be in PowerPoint projections of 12 minutes, with 3 additional minutes for questions and answers.

Poster presentations will be held in a special session, not concurrent with oral presentations.

The space allocated per poster is 1 m x 1 m (36 x 36 inches), with a smaller gap between one poster and another. Posters exceeding 1 m x 1 m could be invading the space allocated to neighboring cartel and may have to be bent to respect the space allocated to the next poster.

The poster is expected to be of a graphic nature (pictures, graphs, tables), rather than a copy of a paper where text predominates. The committee suggests using text in the form of short phrases or sentences in a bulleted outline rather than an extensive narrative as in an article. Photos, diagrams, charts and/or figures should be most of the information presented in the poster. Some experts recommend that the title of the poster should be written font size 70, names and affiliation of the authors in font size 60, headers in font size 40, text in font size 30 numbers and legends figures in font size 20. Ideally, several people should be able to read the poster from a distance of approximately 1.5 to 2.0 m (4-6 feet) away.

Posters should be placed in their display panels on the first day of the meeting and stay there until they are presented on September 8.

For the authors who request it, the organizers will issue a certificate indicating the title and authors of a presentation. Only on one certificate will be issued per presentation, regardless of how many co-authors it has. If none of the persons in the list of authors is registered for the Meeting, the presentation will be canceled and no certificate is issued.
